My story
Hello! If we haven't had the chance to meet yet, my name is Jess.
I grew up with three sisters, amazing parents, and many dogs (who often make appearances in my photos). I love hiking and being in nature, playing the piano, and spending time with friends, family, and my dogs.
To me, art is a form of expression, and I love to challenge myself to not only capture the beauty in the world but also embrace the uncomfortable emotions we may experience throughout life. For all my work, I take inspiration from the places I love and my other creative outlets of dance, music and poetry.
I am self-taught artist, with my Grandma and Dad having had a significant influence on my work and development as an artist. I have always been very shy about my art and struggled to put myself out there for many years, but when hiding my desire to create and express myself became unbearable, I decided to make the transition from working in Diversity and Inclusion to pursue my passion for Art in 2023.
With each piece I create, I delve into its meaning, carefully considering how it makes me feel and how I am connected to it. All my paintings inform and push the next one, and I love exploring and being inspired by where my creativity takes me. Each piece begins by exploring the concept with sketches, and then multiple colour combinations are tested to explore and identify the final composition. I then transform these initial explorations into vibrant and expressive pantings.
Within my work, one of my main sources of inspiration is my personal experience of grief, having lost my Dad to cancer when I was 19. This had a huge impact on my art, and I stopped creating my own work for a long time after losing my Dad. It has been challenging to come back to this part of myself, but I hope to never lose my desire to create and continue to introspectively explore my own emotions through art, translating them onto the canvas.
This is what I aim to continue doing —pushing myself creatively, being brave, and sharing parts of myself with the world. I hope my work inspires the same in you.
